INDUSTRY SPOTLIGHT Interview With Aussie Stylist Maddy May Empowering Others To Conquer The World

I met Maddy May nearly two years ago through our mutual involvement in beauty pageants and, my God, has it been a wild ride since then. Maddy is based in Sydney, Australia and is a bit of a chameleon when it comes to the fashion industry. Beginning in modelling and pageants, she has honed her understanding of the fashion industry over the last decade, travelling the world to work in multiple countries.

Maddy is interested in youth work, having contributed to a number of organisations, and continues her mission to empower others throughout her burgeoning stylist career. She is definitely one to watch in the Australian fashion scene, as she has an incredible amount of drive. Maddy has a selfless determination to help others succeed, has a genuine love for the industry, and is sure to become a fixture in fashion.

How did you discover styling?

I got pushed into it. I always took my male and female friends shopping and had a keen eye for putting people in pieces they never would have chosen for themselves. I helped out a friend of mine and put together 2 outfits in 30 minutes from top to bottom, and he was incredibly impressed. From there, he pressured me to start a styling business, as he claimed I had an amazing eye which was rare, and that’s when I started my business.

What is your favourite part about being a stylist and why?

I think that comes back to my personality. I’m an empath and I like to make others feel incredible, and that look on someone’s face when they feel incredibly beautiful, that’s worth all the effort to me.

If you could style anyone, who would it be and why?

Gosh that’s a hard question... I’m a youth worker by trade and I take that into my styling to create my business and work around others and how they feel rather than myself. For me, it’s not about how I feel and the excitement it gives me, but it’s about empowering people to feel incredible like they can conquer the world.

What is your favourite style of fashion and why?

The only way I can answer this question is based on my own personal style, and I seem to style outfits in different styles as a whole. Some days, I dress in 1910s wiggle dresses whereas others I dress like a hippie, it all depends on my mood. When it comes to clients, I assess their shape, their personality, and how they want to feel, and dress them based off of that.

Do you have a favourite brand that you like/would like to use when styling someone and why?

I adore working with Tree of Life clothing and especially their saris. They are incredible to work with and can create incredible movement and shapes.

What is your goal for your stylist career?

To be a household name, not for who I am and who I work with, but for making men and women feel empowered, beautiful, and confident.

If you had any advice for someone wanting to become a stylist, what would you say?

Your vision and someone else’s are completely different. Work on what you want to create, work with people who understand your vision and mission in the world, and create beautiful things.
